The Field of Dreams, located in Bee Cave, Tx, is home for over 5,000 players a year through our LTYA programs. The current lighting installed in the 1990's has provided safe playable sports fields for the community for over 20 years. As technology and sports programs evolved, we recognized several key issues with the current lighting at the Field of Dreams: Player safety standards have increased over the past 20 years, current lighting has limitations, more people live in the surrounding area, and light pollution is a concern for the community.
To address those concerns LTYA proactively began to search for ways to improve the lighting. We evaluated several different options including retrofitting existing lights, replacing our generator based lights with few and more efficient generators and new lighting technologies. As a result of that year long investigation LTYA came to the recommendation internally to replace all of the lights at the Field of Dreams. Since that time we have worked hand in hand with our neighbors, the community at large, the
International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) and the City of Bee Cave to create a comprehensive plan to address all of the concerns.
In April of 2019, the City of Bee Cave approved the lighting plan detailed below to replace all existing sports lighting at the Field of Dreams with modern, state of the art LED lighting. This new lighting will provide players with approved playing light levels to ensure safety while also being IDA approved. This will dramatically reduce or remove the lighting pollution & sky glow for our neighbors and the community. Lighting of this kind typically will run in the $1,000,000 range, but the addition of the IDA requirements put this cost at roughly $1.2 million. While this is an additional cost for LTYA, it is one that we gladly pay to be a good neighbor and part of the community of Bee Cave and surrounding areas.
The current plan to replace lighting at the Field of Dreams is as follows:Phase 1 - $500,000 to replace existing soccer lights on Field 1 (permanent poles) and Fields 2 & 3 (generator lights). This will be installed by 2020.
Phase 2 & 3 - $700,000 to replace lighting on baseball fields and add lighting to unlit fields. This is currently slated to begin work by 2029.
As a local non-profit, LTYA is a self funded organization that receives funding from player registrations, donations, scholarship funds and grants. We are working with community groups, private companies and individuals to accelerate this time frame however possible.
